Project Ropa January 2023 Newsletter ❄️

Happy February!

Thank you to everyone who supported us in 2022. With your support we surpassed our end-of-year goal and raised over $12K!

But, we still need your help in 2023.

According to the Brookings Institution, the cost of basic necessities increased more than 20 percent between 2018 and 2021 in Los Angeles, a painful number that is only getting much worse this year. A 2021 report by the Economic Roundtable predicts that chronic homelessness will increase by 86 percent in Los Angeles County by 2023, compared with the situation before the pandemic began.

There are endless ways to help someone unsheltered but it all starts with making a connection with the person in need of help. Clean clothes may seem like a small thing to those who have access to them every day. But, to someone on the streets, a new outfit can restore dignity, rekindle optimism, and fuel a sense of opportunity. It can also help reduce the spread of transmissible diseases and protect the environment.

Volunteer Spotlight
This month we are bringing back our volunteer spotlight and starting the year off highlighting our amazing volunteer Laetitia. She has been volunteering with Project Ropa for over a year now in Hollywood.

Laetitia, why did you start volunteering?

“I started volunteering because I was looking for ways to serve my community here in Hollywood during the holidays season. Also, in my prayer time, I was asking to get help for my shopping addiction and to declutter my closet which was unnecessarily full. I was looking for a shelter or an organization that would take clothing to give them to those in need. On Thanksgiving of 2021 it was my first time volunteering for Project Ropa.”

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Project Ropa?

“Volunteering for Project Ropa has brought me way more than I could imagine. I enjoy serving selflessly the homeless community especially here in Hollywood where the situation is critical because we give hope and smiles when all seem lost. Every time I have served I have learned something or it has put things in perspective for me: humility, more kindness, more compassion, a fighting spirit, hope, being more mindful of my spending habit with shopping. What I was giving out to the community on a weekly basis, I was receiving right back by all the wonderful people I have met, the volunteers but most by the homeless themselves. I enjoy doing my best to bring them a little bit of joy, dignity and attention. I enjoy making a positive impact on their lives. It is the most rewarding feeling.”
