Clothing is a basic human need — yet in California, it is still not officially recognized as essential.
Every day, we meet people who are turned away from jobs, interviews, housing appointments, and court dates simply because they don’t have access to clean, well-fitting clothing. Not out of neglect, but because our state does not classify clothing as a basic necessity.
This gap creates real barriers to employment, stability, and dignity.

Recognizing clothing as essential would open the door to:
    • Greater opportunity
    • Increased safety
    • Improved health and hygiene
    • More equitable access to services
    • The chance for people to rebuild their lives

No one should have to choose between staying warm and paying for transportation, or between clean clothes and their next meal.
Project Ropa is calling on the State of California to formally recognize clothing as an essential need — and we’re asking for your support.
Sign our petition to help ensure that every person in our state has guaranteed access to this basic necessity.

Together, we can move toward a future where dignity is not a privilege, but a right.

Our community has been incredibly generous, and our clothing shelves are now overflowing. 💙 To give our team time to sort and process donations, we are pausing accepting clothing donations until after the New Year.

In the meantime, there are still important ways you can support our work:

💰 Make a monetary donation — your support keeps our vans on the road, our warehouse running, and our staff employed.

🧴 Donate travel-size hygiene items — body wash, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, razors, lotion, menstrual products, and toilet paper.

👟 Provide men’s essentials — shoes (sizes 9–17), underwear, and socks (all sizes).

Every donation helps restore dignity, warmth, and comfort to our unhoused neighbors. Thank you for standing with us during this busy season.

Today is #GivingTuesday, and your support truly matters. 💙

This year, requests for clothing and hygiene essentials have more than doubled. Thousands of Angelenos are struggling, and the need keeps growing.
So far, we’ve distributed over 124,000 garments, 7,500+ hygiene kits, and supported 5,000 people across LA — but we can’t keep up without you.

    Your gift today helps provide:
    🧥 Warm clothing
    🧴 Hygiene kits
    🧦 Socks, shoes, and essentials
🎒 Work attire for job seekers

We’re working to raise $10,000 to keep our warehouse running, our vans on the road, and dignity within reach for our neighbors.

If you can, please give today.

The need in Los Angeles has never been greater.

This year alone, requests for clean clothing, shoes, bras, menstrual products, and hygiene essentials have more than doubled. We’ve heard from 143 organizations across 200+ service sites—shelters, hospitals, public defenders, schools, and social workers—all asking for the same thing: help.

So far this year, we’ve given over 124,000 garments a second life and served more than 5,000 people across Los Angeles. And the need continues to grow. People in our community are being forced to choose between food and clothing, rent and hygiene, warmth and survival.

Last week, a social worker reached out:

“I’m looking for winter clothing and blankets for my clients who are homeless. With the weather getting colder, we desperately need coats, blankets, socks, and sweaters. Do you have any items available?”

    A person in need shared:

“I just started a job and need help getting black cargo pants and T-shirts.”

These requests come in every single day.

Tomorrow kicks off Giving Tuesday, and we’re working to raise $10,000 by December 31st so we can continue providing clean clothing, menstrual care, hygiene essentials, and shoes to neighbors who need them most.

If you’re able to support early, you don’t need to wait.

Huge thanks to Project for Social Impact for donating 100 hygiene kits! Your generosity helps our neighbors show up to work, school, and appointments with confidence and dignity. Access to soap, deodorant, toothpaste, and period care isn’t a luxury, it’s basic healthcare that supports well-being and opportunity.

Donate today to help us reach more neighbors in need.
