Project Ropa February 2023 Newsletter

Happy February!

We’ve been quite busy this past month thanks in part to IKEA who organized a clothing drive in January at all of their Southern California stores and partnered with Project Ropa and our nonprofit community partner Why We Give Project to receive all of the items from the clothing drive. Earlier this month staff from IKEA came to our warehouse in Gardena and dropped off more than 85 IKEA bags that were filled with clothing items.

Staff from Sheltersuit Foundation stopped by our Echo Park service site earlier this month to show our clients the unique features of their sleeping bags which are designed specifically for people experiencing homelessness. This was our second year receiving Sheltersuit’s sleeping bags and our clients living on the streets are always incredibly grateful to be able to have them especially with the recent weather.

Become a Monthly Donor

Our mission to restore dignity and empower the lives of people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles by providing clean clothes, hygiene essentials, and employment opportunities while reducing textile waste and minimizing our carbon footprint is something that we are deeply passionate about, and we believe that every contribution helps us make a real difference in the world.

Monthly donations provide us with a reliable and consistent source of funding that allows us to plan ahead and make a greater impact over time. Even a small monthly donation of $5 can go a long way in helping us achieve our goals and make a meaningful difference in the world.

As a monthly donor, you will receive regular updates on our progress, and be the first to know about new initiatives and projects. Your contributions will help us to continue providing vital support to unhoused and low-income individuals and families in the community.

Volunteer Spotlight
This month in our volunteer spotlight we are featuring Lexie, who has been volunteering at Project Ropa for almost a year at our warehouse and service sites.

Tell us a little about yourself?

“I’m Lexie and I’m 25 years old. I was born in Vancouver, Canada and grew up in Manhattan Beach. I am in the midst of preparing to apply for PA (Physician Assistant) school, but previously I worked as a TMS Technician at a mental health treatment center. I have been with my partner for over ten years and we have a German shepherd that we absolutely adore. I love live music and live theatre, crocheting, baking, eating, and spending time with my family.”

Why did you start volunteering?

“Volunteering is something that I had always wanted to get involved with, but never necessarily gave myself the time to do so. So luckily for me, when I found out that volunteer hours were a requirement to apply to PA school, I felt justified in letting myself carve out time to give back — and I am so grateful! When I’m volunteering, it doesn’t even feel like a “requirement to fulfill” because it’s honestly one of my favorite parts of my week!”

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at Project Ropa?

“I love being able to volunteer on-site and witness the amazing impact that this organization has. Seeing the smiles and hearing the thanks from every person we get the opportunity to serve is the most incredible feeling. In addition to the essentials we provide, to be able to give back in the form of smiles, conversations, hugs, handshakes, and laughter is really powerful. It is such a rewarding feeling to help those who are unhoused feel more dignified, confident, and happy. I feel so lucky to be a part of it.”

Lexie, thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to supporting our mission.
